Commissioning creative work
Employing an illustrator or graphic designer is easy as pie. However, just like so many other things, the cost depends on what you want done. Below is a list of a few things worth thinking about when you contact one of our members.

Who – and what – are you looking for?

1. What do you need?
A good first step is to visit illustratorcentrum.se – just as you have now done. Here you can find a number of inspiring solutions and styles.

2. Who is the right person to do your job?
Use the search function to find illustrators or graphic designers. Use our search tips if you’re uncertain how to begin.

What will it cost?
When it’s time to contact an illustrator or designer for a bid, then
describe

1. What you want

Do you want a particular motif or is the illustrator free to interpret the subject? It’s very good to show examples of pictures or images if you have something specific in mind.

2. Where it is to be published

Remember that how the image is to be used affects the costs. How and where will the image be used, for how long and by whom? To give an example: the job concerns an illustration, quarter page, for a magazine with a circulation of about 25,000. The illustration will be published in only one issue, published only in Sweden, but will be put out on the magazine’s homepage for a year.

3. When do you need the work?

Give your schedule. When do you want to see a first draft or sketch and when must the finished piece or design be delivered? Is there a fee for drafts or sketches?

4. Your budget

Indicating a budget gives the illustrator or designer an idea of how much time his or her work can take.

5. How you want the work

Specify technical information: approximate size the image will be printed or shown in; colour or black-and-white; need for space for text, etc.

6. Contract

To avoid misunderstandings, it is prudent to have a written contract. In principle, the contract should contain the same text as the bid.

Unless otherwise stated, the illustrator owns the original image. You purchase only the right to publish the image on just that occasion you have stated and agreed upon.
