Emmy WahlbäckEmmy WahlbäckPicture book (Degree Project) - Far from EuthymiaIllustration from my book "Far from Euthymia". This was my final degree project at Konstfack University, to complete my bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. Euthymia is ancient Greek and can be translated roughly as "well being". It is a term that is used within psychiatry to describe a state between mania and depression in an individual with bipolar disorder where the individual is symptom free.  I've used Goddesses and beings from the Greek mythology to personify symptoms and events connected with bipolar disorder and the experience of being treated in a locked psychiatric hospital. The book is written as a narrative poem that can be read on the side of the illustrations. They are made using pencil, charcoal and liquid ink that is often put onto the pages using handmade "brushes" and tools that I made with things like plastic shards and pill packaging. I wanted to use the contrast between the fine, careful pencil drawings and the wild and uncontrolled expression of the ink in order to portray the fluctuations of the illness.
